  • Joint statement by Federation CJA and CIJA on injunction against demonstrations targeting Jewish community institutions
    March 12, 2024

In recent weeks, the anti-Israel protests that have waged nonstop since Hamas' Oct. 7 massacre have grown increasingly aggressive, specifically targeting synagogues, community centres, and even hospitals, stoking fear in the hearts of Canadian Jews across the country. Last week in Montreal, staff and event goers were trapped inside the Federation CJA campus for hours, and in Toronto, protestors gathered in front of synagogue and a nearby non-profit supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, Jewish day schools had to be dismissed or traffic rerouted after demonstrations outside another synagogue, and properties of surrounding homes were invaded by protestors.
In an effort to continue to protect our community from hostile antisemitic protests, this Friday morning, March 15, we will be at the Montreal Courthouse to request that the injunction requiring protestors remain a minimum of 50 meters away from Jewish community institutions be extended.
We will continue to explore every available avenue to ensure the safety and security of the Jewish community.
