A hotel in Sarajevo, an opera house in Prague, a memorial in Lviv, a bridge in Mostar, a garden in Ireland, a market in Hong Kong and a church in Toledo, these are stops on an unusual itinerary. Each place tells stories of languages in conflict. Languages are a powerful vehicle of memory and, when they have been eliminated or suppressed, words from the past have particular resonance. In her talk Sherry Simon will introduce some of these places and their histories, lingering in one special translated site in Central Europe where Jewish memory is revived through language.
