Joint Statement from Federation CJA and CIJA

Yesterday, lawyers for Federation CJA served Mayor Plante with copies of the injunction barring radical anti-Israel groups from protesting within a 50-metre radius of the Federation building, the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, the Cummings Centre, the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA, Herzliah High School, and United Talmud Torahs of Montreal. Following months of antisemitic protests allowed to promulgate on the streets of Montreal, and as protestors continue to test limits, the mayor must step up and impose tougher measures to protect community centres, schools, and places of worship. We expect the mayor to make sure law enforcement upholds the court's order and does everything within their powers to ensure that the terms are adhered to.

Be it via direct communication or public statements, Federation CJA and CIJA have repeatedly made public authorities, including Mayor Plante, aware of the grave safety concerns of the Jewish community and the urgent need for concrete measures to deal with the escalating nature of public protests and potential violence targeting the Jewish community, as well as to the dramatic rise in antisemitism. A clear message must be sent to those who seek to promote hate in our streets that this will not be tolerated, and this starts by making sure the injunction is being respected.

A Message from Montreal Police Chief and Federation CJA's Ongoing Commitment to Safety and Security

On March 4th, outside the Federation CJA building, we saw for the first time an angry mob successfully barricading all entrances and exits to the building in a flagrant violation of peaceful assembly and freedom to demonstrate. That for a period of three hours, police authorities were unable to ensure access in or out of the building, adequately protect building property, and provide reasonable safeguarding for members of our community to assemble in a secure manner was disappointing and unacceptable. This aggressive scene, as well as public statements by Federation CJA and CIJA, were covered extensively by national and international media.

Following our direct and ongoing engagement with the SPVM, Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher has asked us to share this message, where he addresses the incident directly to our community. We will continue to work with the SPVM on issues impacting community safety and security. It is important to highlight that the SPVM was out in full force the following day at the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue, creating an effective buffer zone and corridor to ensure both safety and access to the building and to those gathered outside. The court injunction that we sought helped to keep demonstrators off our property.

Jews, like all Quebecers, have every right to feel safe in our city and to be free to circulate and gather peacefully.

NDP Motion on Middle East Peace: A Community Triumph

On March 18, an amended "Canada's actions to promote peace in the Middle East" motion passed in the House of Commons, sidestepping a potential shift in decades of Canadian foreign policy thanks to our united, vocal advocacy. This moment underscored the power of community action—with over 30,000 of us and our allies rallying to send an astonishing 900,000 emails and make thousands of calls to MPs. This massive effort led to critical amendments, including the removal of a clause for the unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, thereby preserving Canada’s balanced stance on Middle East peace.

Let’s show our appreciation for their unwavering support by reaching out to thank the 117 MPs who voted no, and for standing firmly with us and our allies.

Canada's foreign minister’s announcement of the 'arms embargo' on Israel comes at a time when Israeli systems and technology are now protecting Canadian pilots, fighters, and naval combatants around the world. Israel has not purchased Canadian weapon systems or conventional arms in over 30 years.
