WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW NOW

"It is heavy. It is hard... but to be honest, I believe it’s the least I can do," reflects a participant on the current Federation CJA volunteer mission in Israel.

This week, our community stands united on the ground in Israel, volunteering to bear witness and lend support. If ever there was a time to #StandUp and show up to make a difference, to do our part, it is now.

Join us in May 2024 for an emotional and inspiring solidarity mission during Israel's 76th anniversary

Marking two years since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Federation CJA's heartfelt response has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Thanks to the generosity of 1,957 donors, we've raised a staggering $2,494,632 for Ukraine relief. This incredible outpouring enabled us to support the over 120 newly arrived families, send 39 deserving kids to Camp B’nai Brith, allowing them to forge new friendships and integrate, and much more.

Reflecting on this journey, Yair Szlak, CEO and President, shares a powerful message: "Two years ago, as the war in Ukraine began, I stood on the ground amidst the echoes of conflict, witnessing firsthand the devastation and the indomitable spirit of those fighting for their homes and futures. The resilience of the Ukrainian people amidst such profound adversity was not just inspiring; it was a clarion call for action. Here at Federation CJA, driven by the values of Tikkun Olam, we took that call to heart. Our response was immediate and heartfelt as we extended our support to the many Ukrainian newcomers who sought refuge in Montreal. Seeing the community come together to welcome, support, and integrate these individuals and families into our midst has been a profoundly moving and deeply personal journey. Our commitment to aiding those affected by the war remains unwavering. The courage and strength of the Ukrainian community continue to inspire us every day, reminding us of the power of humanity and solidarity in the face of such turmoil."

Marianna, a Jewish Ukrainian newcomer to Montreal, echoes this sentiment, “In so many ways, the community has been there to support us and to make us feel so welcomed. The community showed us that Jewish life here in Montreal can be just like Jewish life in Ukraine.”

Together, these stories weave a narrative of hope, resilience, and community spirit. They underscore our ongoing commitment to stand with Ukraine, celebrating the incredible impact of our collective efforts to support and integrate Ukrainian newcomers into the fabric of our community.

ON CAMPUS

In response to yesterday’s protest, Eta Yudin, Vice-president, Quebec, CIJA captured our community’s sentiments perfectly.

“Antisemitism on university campuses, including McGill, has reached alarming levels. This morning it resulted in a mob blockading the Bronfman Building. This isn’t about the Middle East conflict: it’s about targeting institutions perceived to be Jewish. Today’s direct action not only obstructs all students access to education but also creates a climate of intimidation and fear. These escalating incidents endanger Jewish students’ safety, undermine our collective values, and threaten equal access to education.”

McGill University must take action by upholding its own anti-hate policies. To voice your concerns about the situation on campus, visit Federation CJA’s ON CAMPUS resources.

We strongly encourage student to report any incident or disruption to regular campus activity. When incidents like this happen on campus, it’s essential that it be documented and reported.

IN THE NEWS

Banning politicians from your religious institutions is not the Canadian way.

A recent statement made by the National Council of Canadian Muslims, as well as the Canadian Association of Imams, indicates that elected officials would be disinvited from Ramadan and visits to local mosques unless they met the conditions of demanding restoration of UNRWA funding, condemnation of Israel, and an immediate, unconditional ceasefire.

In response, CIJA is asking everyone to please amplify this message.
