“Like others, Jewish students want to learn, explore ideas and make new friends. We must ensure our campuses are not hotbeds of toxicity, bullying and scapegoating. Jewish students must, without threats of violence, be able to engage fully as Jews.” – Yair Szlak & Eta Yudin

Antisemitism on campus

In response to rising antisemitism on campuses, Federation CJA continues to strengthen our presence, focusing on advocacy and strategic resources. Federation CJA, through Hillel and other Campus initiatives, emphasizes Informing, Empowering, and Supporting students in addressing antisemitism. Our recent Op-Ed in the Gazette underscored the importance of combating of hateful incidents, and our Student Resource Guide — recently recognized by Deborah Lyons — was only a part of our response. This email will explore some of the other ways we are taking a stand on this issue.

INFORM

“With the dramatic increase in antisemitism on campus, Hillel has been a source of comfort, guidance and security in these scary times. The Hillel staff is always there to talk and offer advice, and Hillel Montreal as a whole ensures that no Jewish student feels alone or isolated on campus.”  – Jenna Yaphe, Dawson Student

To foster an informed campus community capable of addressing antisemitism, we acknowledge the imperative of providing guidance to both students and faculty across our four Montreal campuses.

Faculty Sessions: Recognizing the current tense climate, Federation CJA supported the establishment of the Faculty Network to enhance collaboration and support with faculty and staff members from our four Montreal Universities. This network focuses on Education, Mental Health, Advocacy, and Mentorship to combat the rise of antisemitism on campuses. Leaders in this network recently met with Consul General Paul Hirschson to explore avenues for support and collaboration in advocacy and education.

Protocol for Reporting Incidents on Campus: Navigating the complexities of addressing antisemitism on Montreal campuses can be challenging for students. To provide clarity and guidance, we have outlined a specific protocol for reporting incidents on our website. This protocol is essential for effectively addressing antisemitism, emphasizing that only students have the standing to take action.

Active Reporting and its Impact: Since October 7th, 83 antisemitic incidents have been reported on Montreal campuses, including abuse of podium, hate speech, and vandalism. This likely underrepresents the actual occurrences due to students' hesitancy or lack of awareness in reporting. Through social media engagement and in-person parlour meetings, we're actively encouraging students to recognize and address abuse of podium. It's crucial to emphasize that Federation CJA has no standing on campus, highlighting the necessity for students to take the lead in reporting incidents. Active reporting not only exposes the issue's extent but also ensures the well-being of the student community, making student involvement pivotal for positive change.

EMPOWER

“Another thing that I hope to accomplish with the LEV Fellowship is to gain my own sense of who I am as a Jewish individual, and what I can do in the Community to help and grow as a Jewish individual. Since I'm not in a private Jewish school anymore, I'm out in the real world. I don't want to lose myself, but rather to explore what I could be in the Jewish community.”  – Derek Skolnik, McGill Student

LEV Fellowship: Amidst the rise in antisemitism on campus, Federation CJA is empowering students like Derek Skolnik to take action. Derek's experience at McGill shifted dramatically post-October 7th, prompting him to join the LEV Fellowship. This donor funded Federation CJA initiative focuses on empowering Jewish students, fostering engagement, and creating a safe space on campus. As Derek becomes part of this effort, he aims to broaden engagement, establish supportive networks, and create a safe haven for students. The fellowship not only tackles antisemitism but also helps students navigate diverse perspectives on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

B’Yachad Fellowship: Similarly to the LEV Fellowship, the B’Yachad Fellowship workshop series for CEGEP students, offered by Federation CJA, provides unique opportunities for skill development and advocacy. The program equips CEGEP students with skills to advocate for Israel, respond to antisemitism, and reinforce their connection with Israel. Both fellowships expose participants to experts in relevant fields through presentations and hands-on workshops, fostering confidence for university and work life. For inquiries or involvement in advocacy initiatives, contact Naomi Mazer at [email protected].

Student Government Elections: The nominations period has opened across campuses and elections are imminent. Whether you want to nominate someone or run yourself, Hillel can show you the way. Contact Avishai Infeld at [email protected] for assistance. Additionally, our online hub provides essential support and information for addressing antisemitic incidents on campus, ensuring the well-being of Jewish students across Montreal campuses.

CIJA Campus advocacy guide: CIJA's Campus Advocacy Guide actively empowers students by collaborating with university administrations to address antisemitism and discrimination. For instance, the guide played a crucial role in supporting a recent Canada-Israel academic collaboration, fostering partnerships between administrators, faculties, and scholars. For inquiries or support, contact Scott Goldstein at [email protected].

SUPPORT

“Last semester was challenging academically and emotionally. Hillel gave me the support to get through it and a place to feel comfortable and be myself.”  – Maryasha Yarmush, John Abbott College

Sustaining campus momentum, Federation CJA, through Hillel Montreal initiatives, showcases its commitment to resilience and empowerment beyond campus. Through facilitated meetings with public officials, participation in rallies, and support for student-led initiatives, we actively shape a dynamic environment for Jewish students on campus. Our overarching goal is to provide comprehensive support for students' well-being, incorporating enhanced security measures to foster a unified and supportive environment.

Dibur: Dibur, the Israeli community on campus, has become a lifeline for Hebrew-speaking Israeli students living in Montreal, providing a second home and a sense of belonging. Following the challenges post-October 7th, Dibur has emerged as a safe haven, offering a space to relax, connect, and share experiences. Participants express how it bridges the gap between their Israeli identity and life in Montreal, fostering a supportive community. It serves as a reminder of their Israeli identity and creates a home away from home. For more information on these sessions, contact Nati BenAmi at [email protected].

Parlour sessions: In response to the challenges since October 7th, we initiated weekly parlour sessions across the city, creating a safe space for students to discuss current events, personal experiences, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and simply be together. Facilitated by Federation CJA professionals and Jewish communal experts, these sessions addressed various concerns, including navigating social media, engaging in real-life situations, and understanding complex topics like the widely misinterpreted "river to the sea" slogan. If you are interested in setting up a parlour meeting for students or parents of students, please contact Stephen Rabinovitch at [email protected] for more information.

It’s important to remember that students are NEVER alone. Federation CJA, along with many partners, is fighting day in and day out to do everything in its power at every single level to support our students and our community.
