This is an important community security update.

This morning it was discovered that, in the middle of the night, a single bullet was fired at the entrance doors of both Azrieli Talmud Torah and Yeshiva Gedolah. No one was in either building. Damage was minimal, in part thanks to security features already in place.

Police investigators are on scene. Our Director of Community Security is in constant contact with the police.

These facilities are secured and students and staff are all safe.

Federation CJA has taken the following actions:

  1. We have held an urgent discussion with the Chief of Police this morning and we have requested increased police presence outside, near and around all Jewish institutions for the coming days.
  2. We will be providing Jewish institutions with a grant to increase security presence (schools/CPEs/Shuls) starting immediately and at least through the weekend,
  3. Our advocacy agent CIJA is in communication with the Minister of Public Safety and Security, and all levels of government.

We recognize this situation presents a significant change to our security situation. We are working on all fronts to address the matter. We understand that this adds stress and anxiety to our community members. We urge you to continue to take part in Jewish life while remaining vigilant at all times.

We will communicate with you immediately as we receive further updates.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. In an emergency, call 911. When safe, report to the Community Security Hotline at 514-343-4343 or use our online form. As an additional step, we urge you to upload any photos or video that you capture to our portal. We are not going to answer all uploads, but as we gather data and information, it is helpful for us to see what you witnessed once you are safe and are able to share.

President and Chief Executive Officer,
