WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27 • 11 AM – 12 PM Members $10.00 Guests $15.00 Home to Marco Polo and Titian, Cannaregio is rarely visited by tourists. But our guide, Luisella, will lead us along the Fondamenta della Misericordia, the cobblestone walkway flanked by the lagoon on one side and local shops and markets on the other, past gardens and open spaces, where we will observe the everyday lives of Venetians. This quiet sestiere (district) has some fascinating historic sites as well, such as the outrageously ornate Church of the Jesuits, dating back to 1602, and the house of the artist, Tintoretto, some of whose paintings can be viewed nearby at the serene Madonna dell-Orto Church. We will wind our way until we reach the Jewish ghetto, where Jews were made to reside for over 270 years, until Napoleon granted them the freedom to live where they chose.
