VOICES FOR CHANGE: ADVOCACY IN ACTION

CIJA criticizes Canada's recent UN vote for a ceasefire, calling it hypocritical and shocking. The vote occurred shortly after Canada demanded Hamas release hostages and disarm, but the resolution failed to hold Hamas accountable for war crimes, including those committed on October 7.

CIJA views this decision, especially during Chanukah, as a neglect of the Jewish community and Israel's right to self-defence, raising concerns about increased antisemitism in Canada.

COMMUNITY SECURITY

Throughout the current crisis, Federation CJA President and CEO Yair Szlak and CIJA Quebec V.P. Eta Yudin have maintained a continuous dialogue with Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher to prioritize community safety. Their interview with the Montreal Police Chief reveals key police actions in response to the community's needs.

Chief Dagher discusses the increased surveillance around Jewish day schools and synagogues, leading to fewer incidents and some arrests. He reassures the community, urging them not to let fear alter their behaviour, with the promise, "We will be there to protect you." Also discussed is police handling of hate speech at demonstrations and the critical role of the community in reporting suspicious or threatening acts to 9-1-1. Chief Dagher explains that even seemingly minor details can be crucial in a broader investigation, helping police connect different accounts for clearer insights.

ON CAMPUS

We want our students to feel EMPOWERED to #StandUp and take action against antisemitism. Given the rise in students reporting professors who abuse their podium with antisemitic or anti-Israel rhetoric, fostering a sense of agency among students and enabling them to advocate for themselves and their peers effectively is an urgent priority for Federation CJA.

Remember, you are NEVER alone.
