March 20, 2024

The annual hate fest dubiously known as Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) has begun. On our campuses, students are being subjected to biased, discriminatory, and overtly antisemitic rhetoric that will single out Jewish students and anyone who dares to support them. And it will go on all month long.

Monday, March 4, our community saw a glimpse of what students have faced on campuses. Tuesday, March 12, at Concordia University, masked aggressors once again targeted Jewish students, banging on the walls of the Hillel club room and yelling antisemitic chants. This cowardly attempt to instill fear and repression is just one more example of the ongoing intimidation Jewish students face on our campuses.

Across campuses, including McGill, UdeM, Concordia, UQAM, Dawson and Vanier, an escalation of malicious forms of protest is planned for the coming weeks. Organizations like the Palestinian Youth Movement and SPHR are regularly holding protests and lectures justifying and glorifying terrorism, like the attacks of October 7th.

We will not be silent.

We are taking a stand. We strongly believe IAW is toxic to campus life. In response to acts of intimidation and racist rhetoric, Hillel will continue to demand university leadership take immediate and decisive action to hold accountable those who foster an unsafe environment on campus.

We are fighting back. In anticipation of IAW activities, Hillel, in a powerful collaboration with student groups across campuses, has organized programming aimed at countering the misinformation. Educational events, an Israel advocacy retreat, and social gatherings on campuses across Montreal provide a platform for voices that are often silenced in these debates. Our goal is to turn challenges into opportunities for unity and strength, celebrating our students' resilience.
