“As a volunteer counselor at a centre for women in abusive relationships and their children, I am constantly inspired by the resilience of the women who come here to seek shelter from conjugal violence. Domestic abuse isn’t something anybody expects to experience, so it’s hard to imagine the courage it takes for these women to leave their homes and start the process of rebuilding their lives, often with young children in tow.

We provide guidance and support to help the women build their confidence and learn to love themselves, as well as safety training and referrals to other resources in the community. It is tremendously humbling to play any sort of role in these women’s journeys, and I am infinitely grateful that these resources exist in the Jewish community.”

Last year, over 4,000 of the most vulnerable members of the Jewish community received essential psychosocial support with the help of Federation CJA.

The one-bedroom apartment in Sofia, Bulgaria shared by Eliezer and his grandparents was much too small for a family of three — but that’s the reality of being poor in a struggling city. With the help of Federation CJA’s international partners, Eliezer immersed himself in an intensive science track at school and finished at the top of his class. Unfortunately, Bulgaria’s bleak economy didn’t give Eliezer much hope for a future. And so, he sought a way out.

At 16, he was accepted to an elite scholarship program in Israel for promising students in science and technology who come from underprivileged backgrounds. Today, he and Jewish teens from around the world live and study together in Israel. “I want a better future, and I want to get a better education,” says Eliezer. “Here in Israel, it’s the right place.”

Whether connecting people to the Jewish community, responding to crisis at a moment’s notice, or caring for the critical needs of a fellow jew, Federation CJA’s impact stretches from Montreal to Israel to over 70 countries around the world.

“As an Ethiopian Jew living in Montreal, we have some unique traditions and observances, such as the holiday of Sigd, when we come together to pray and fast 50 days after Yom Kippur. This year, we hosted a gathering in the community centre to learn about the holiday, break the fast and celebrate together. Having the support of the larger Jewish community ensures that our history and culture are preserved. I am proud to contribute to the diversity of our community’s rich culture and to celebrate its importance within society.”

Last year, Federation CJA supported over 40 organizations that strengthen culture and preserve our heritage, enriching Jewish life in Montreal and building Jewish identity.

“There are people in our community who have nothing. Some have had to leave their home country and come to Montreal to try to make a life for themselves. Others are seniors, some widows, and they are very poor. We need to help them. For the past 19 years I’ve been a volunteer, helping people get access to food baskets."

Not only do these baskets help individuals in the Jewish community keep a kosher home and put food, like chicken and eggs, on the table, but they help build a sense of community when the recipients get to know each other. Many times, one person will pick up a basket for a neighbour who can’t walk anymore, or an older relative. We help them with food and they help each other build a life. I may only be 4’8”, but when I help someone who really needs it, I feel like I’m 6 feet tall!”

With the help of Federation CJA, 18,330 people benefited last year from kosher cafeterias, food banks, and the delivery of food baskets and vouchers.
