“I want to build my life and career here in Montreal so I recently got involved with Federation CJA’s Young Adult Division and started going to different events and meeting new people. It's been a great connector.

As I've become more involved, so have my friends. My circle is widening and I love to invite other young people to the events I participate in, especially those who don’t have much family in Montreal. I had never realized how many different opportunities there are for people like me to get involved, be it through volunteering, networking, or coming together over food. There's a place for everyone."

Last year 7,259 young Montrealers participated in Federation CJA programs that provide opportunities for social, networking and leadership development, which help to foster a sense of belonging among vibrant and engaged Jewish youth.

“It’s been one year since we participated on the Montreal Mega Mission to Israel. While on the trip, we were given the chance to get married atop Masada. It was magical! We were surrounded by 600 people from the community who made it so special.

Before the Mission I had never realized all of the opportunities there are to give back to the community. Since coming home, I really got involved: Serving meals to those in need at Le Café; making calls for the annual Combined Jewish Appeal Campaign; and joining Atid, a Women’s Philanthropy leadership training program.

The Mission changed our lives. And we’re very excited to be a part of a community that touches the lives of so many others.”

In 2014, Federation CJA's Montreal Mega Mission brought close to 600 people from a diverse cross-section of our community on the trip of a lifetime to Israel. Over 25% visited for their first time and 13.5% were under the age of 35.

“During the first month of my family’s immigration to Montreal, I was put in contact with the Jewish community. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and included, and I began to volunteer at events in order to meet new friends and help my children integrate. At an event, I was given the opportunity to register my children to receive free Jewish books and music by mail. I felt like this was an essential component of teaching my children Jewish traditions, and they are so excited when the books arrive! My family has been greatly impacted by the experience of reading the books together at home and also by sharing the lessons together at events, alongside other young families.”

Over 5,000 children in our community have received monthly free Jewish children's books since 2008, including 300 children from a new program for Russian speaking families.

“As an Ethiopian Jew living in Montreal, we have some unique traditions and observances, such as the holiday of Sigd, when we come together to pray and fast 50 days after Yom Kippur. This year, we hosted a gathering in the community centre to learn about the holiday, break the fast and celebrate together. Having the support of the larger Jewish community ensures that our history and culture are preserved. I am proud to contribute to the diversity of our community’s rich culture and to celebrate its importance within society.”

Last year, Federation CJA supported over 40 organizations that strengthen culture and preserve our heritage, enriching Jewish life in Montreal and building Jewish identity.
