Marianna loves to perform and practice music at the JCC in Mariupol, a city of about 500,000 people in southeastern Ukraine. But, Marianna's mother Elena is unemployed, and her father Leonid struggles to provide for his family on his small salary. The family of three lives on $260 a month, and with the economic uncertainty throughout Ukraine, the family's financial circumstances are shaky.

Last month, happy and healthy Marianna was hospitalized after a stroke. When Leonid and Elena found themselves unable to pay for their daughter's growing medical expenses, we were able to step in through our international partners. Now Marianna is getting the help she and her family desperately need.

Last year, Federation CJA provided over $5 million in international funding to help Jews, like Marianna, in Israel and around the world.

“I have faced many barriers in my life, including finding and being able to keep a job. I was on welfare until I started to work in a sheltered workshop here in Montreal. That was 16 years ago. Working here has given me self-confidence, many friendships, and the ability to live on my own as I earn a steady salary. I am a productive part of society, and now know the feeling of success.”

Federation CJA funds 23 different programs to ensure that individuals with disabilities can participate actively in community life.

“As a teacher in a Jewish day school, it is heartbreaking to watch a student struggling academically. I remember one student. His frown was permanent, his eyes never shone and his shoulders slumped. But, after a few weeks of receiving high-quality interventions and seeing his consistent progress, he transformed completely. This child developed a sense of confidence and pride, infused with motivation and purpose. ‘I can’t believe it,’ he whispered to me, ‘I can read!’ And with that statement, his shoulders lifted, his eyes twinkled and he permanently beamed. This is the most inspirational experience a teacher can ever be a part of.”

Over 4,700 children benefit from programs that identify students at-risk for learning difficulties and monitor their progress to help them succeed.

"Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, I eat dinner at Le Café. I've been coming here since the first night it opened, around Purim 2009. I like the food and the people I meet here, but my favourite thing is the volunteers. They all make me feel so welcome every time I walk through the door. Because of this community, I feel like my needs are truly understood."

Last year, Federation CJA served over 27,000 free, hot, kosher meals at Le Café to those in need, with 6% of recipients being children.
