“Every month, my son waits with great anticipation for the parcel to arrive. Even though he can’t read yet, he is already turning the pages on the newly delivered book or pulling out the gift CD. It is very rewarding to see! As a mom, these books help me shape my family and strengthen the Jewish ties in our home.

Beyond receiving free amazing books right to our door, we become empowered as parents to teach our kids more and embark upon a journey of Jewish expression and Jewish identity. Very often, through teaching them, I've found that I am the one with the lesson learned!”

Over 128,000 free Jewish children's books have been distributed to Jewish families in Quebec since 2008.

“I had long repressed my memories. Then everything came back to me: the deportation, the raids, the trek to free France . . . Today, I share my testimony with young people ages 12 to 14. For me, it is a duty of remembrance. It is very moving to know that young people in Quebec from the four corners of the world are interested in my story and the story of the Holocaust. When they ask me: ’What can we do?’ I tell them of a burning forest and of all the animals that flee, except for a hummingbird that returns to the blaze. He douses it with a little bit of water, again and again. When the others ask him: ‘But what’s the point?’ he answers them: ‘I do what I can.”

Each year more than 16,000 people, 70% of whom are students, are sensitized to the dangers of intolerance through Holocaust education, thanks to your support.

“I was at a drug rehab center when I was given a brochure for a study program that could help me improve my life. I had always passed by the university and felt it was a cold, distant structure. I feared that I wouldn’t belong. But that wasn’t the case. I was welcomed warmly and with love. From the first lesson, I came to realize that I wasn’t alone.

Every time I stepped foot in the university, I felt something I've never experienced before. The learning caused me to get more involved in my household and with my children. I now spend more time at home with my children. I really connect with them, which is something that didn't happen before. Because of the opportunity I was given to better myself, things have improved dramatically.”

6,000 children, youth and adults from Beer Sheva and Bnei Shimon’s most disadvantaged populations took part in Federation CJA-supported programs for families and youth at risk, like Access For All and Youth Futures.

"What is the impact of the past on our present generation and their future identity as Jews? This is the core question that shapes our school's work with the community archives. When young students explore their history and become engaged with their past through stories, pictures and artifacts, they internalize the values and aspirations of the Jewish journey and become motivated to pass it from generation to generation, Me-Dor Le-Dor.

It is wonderful to see our students' projects included in a special exhibit that tells the story of their families, for future generations to be inspired."

Federation CJA's funding helps ensure that our collective history in Montreal over the last 275 years is protected and cherished. The community archives have gathered over 120,000 items, including a vast collection of documents, recordings and photographs.
