“I’m a widower without much family in Montreal, and it can be lonely, even though I’ve lived in this neighbourhood most of my life. I’ve been coming to Le Café since it opened in 2009, and I look forward to it each week.

Le Café is a place where I can meet new friends and old, share a meal, and be a part of the community. For some people, this hot meal makes all the difference, and no one is turned away. It’s a terrific resource in the community and I really feel welcome here.”

Since 2009, Federation CJA has served over 194,000 free, hot, kosher meals at Le Café to those in need.

“Thanks to the generous support of donors to Federation CJA and volunteers in our community, underprivileged children in elementary and high schools across the city benefit from the Lunch for a Bunch program.

Before this program was created, these students arrived at school without a lunch, which left them hungry and affected their ability to concentrate in school. Now, twice a week, they receive healthy kosher meals – each one packaged anonymously so the children aren’t singled out. We are reassured knowing that Federation CJA is thinking of and can provide for these students living in difficult situations. A big thank you from our school for this mitzvah.”

Last year, 8,076 nutritious kosher lunches were prepared and delivered to 155 students across 30 schools in Montreal, who otherwise would have gone without.

“There are people in our community who have nothing. Some have had to leave their home country and come to Montreal to try to make a life for themselves. Others are seniors, some widows, and they are very poor. We need to help them. For the past 19 years I’ve been a volunteer, helping people get access to food baskets."

Not only do these baskets help individuals in the Jewish community keep a kosher home and put food, like chicken and eggs, on the table, but they help build a sense of community when the recipients get to know each other. Many times, one person will pick up a basket for a neighbour who can’t walk anymore, or an older relative. We help them with food and they help each other build a life. I may only be 4’8”, but when I help someone who really needs it, I feel like I’m 6 feet tall!”

With the help of Federation CJA, 18,330 people benefited last year from kosher cafeterias, food banks, and the delivery of food baskets and vouchers.

Marianna loves to perform and practice music at the JCC in Mariupol, a city of about 500,000 people in southeastern Ukraine. But, Marianna's mother Elena is unemployed, and her father Leonid struggles to provide for his family on his small salary. The family of three lives on $260 a month, and with the economic uncertainty throughout Ukraine, the family's financial circumstances are shaky.

Last month, happy and healthy Marianna was hospitalized after a stroke. When Leonid and Elena found themselves unable to pay for their daughter's growing medical expenses, we were able to step in through our international partners. Now Marianna is getting the help she and her family desperately need.

Last year, Federation CJA provided over $5 million in international funding to help Jews, like Marianna, in Israel and around the world.
