Montreal, QC, May 2, 2024 – Today, a coalition of Jewish students, faculty, and community members gathered at McGill University to affirm their unwavering support for Jewish and non-Jewish students' safety and academic freedom amidst escalating tensions on campus. In response to an anti-Israel and pro-Hamas encampment glorifying violence, the gathering had one goal: to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, can pursue higher education in a secure and inclusive environment.
"We are here to stand up in support of Jewish and non-Jewish students alike at McGill University, and all universities, wishing to pursue their higher education in a safe environment and without harassment," stated Yair Szlak, President and CEO of Federation CJA. "We are here in support of students who celebrate and sanctify life, and we stand in stark contrast to the pro-Hamas campers who celebrate the deaths of Jews and Israelis and are calling for a global Intifada."
While respecting the fundamental rights of free speech and assembly, the counter protesters emphasized that these rights should not infringe upon others' rights to pursue education without fear or intimidation. The encampment protesters, in contrast, have crossed the line by glorifying terrorists and the October 7 attack, as well as spewing antisemitic slurs such as "go back to Europe.".
In response to growing concerns, McGill University has formally requested the encampment protesters to vacate the premises and have called in the police to assist. This call has been echoed by many in the political class, including Premier Legault who rightfully called on the encampment to be dismantled.
"It is okay and normal to demonstrate for a cause, but an occupation of a university or college campus is not acceptable," remarked Szlak. “Calling for violence against Jews is not acceptable. Spewing antisemitic slurs and chanting violent slogans is not acceptable.”
The frustration among students, Jewish or not, towards the encampment is palpable. Many express a strong desire for the encampment to end swiftly, either voluntarily or through necessary intervention.
As the situation unfolds, the community remains committed to advocating for a campus environment that upholds the values of diversity, tolerance, and academic freedom. They urge all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and mutual respect, fostering an atmosphere conducive to learning and coexistence.
