Federation CJA celebrates Israel's 76th Independence Day with resilience amidst ongoing war

Montreal – May 14, 2024 – As Israel commemorates its 76th Independence Day, the spirit of resilience and determination echoes throughout the Jewish nation, even amidst the ongoing war against Hamas terrorists. Federation CJA and the Montreal Jewish community stand alongside the people of Israel in celebrating this momentous occasion, albeit with a guarded sense of joy as the Jewish nation continues to face war, international challenges and the pain of loss and uncertainty with its hostages.

Yair Szlak, President & CEO of Federation CJA, expressed the sentiments felt by so many Jews around the world today, seeking to celebrate Israel’s 76th year of independence while fighting a terrible war. "In the face of unbearable sadness, and in the face of a world that has forgotten why and how we got here, there is a sense of resilience and strength here in Israel that is impossible to describe," remarked Szlak, from Jerusalem. "So many heroes have emerged, everyday citizens that have mobilized to ensure that Israel remains strong in the face of unthinkable adversity."

Steve Sebag, Chair of the Board of Directors, participated in the Rally for Israel held this afternoon at Place du Canada in downtown Montreal. “We saw thousands of Montrealers, Jews and non-Jews, dance and celebrate in peace and solidarity to show support to the State of Israel,” Sebag said. “The silent majority have demonstrated their strength and alliance in standing up for Canada’s only true ally in the Middle East. We pray for peace to return swiftly to Israel and its neighbours.”

However, amidst the peaceful and festive celebrations, Federation CJA calls for attention to the plight of the hostages held in Gaza for 222 days. Szlak emphasized, "We need to see the 132 hostages being held in Gaza released immediately. We cannot fully celebrate during wartime, with them in captivity." Szlak said the community prays for the swift and safe release of hostages, noting that over 100,000 Israelis have been rendered homeless or displaced as a result of the hostilities.

Federation CJA reaffirms its unwavering support for Israel's right to defend itself and its citizens, while also advocating for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Szlak and Sebag expressed appreciation to the organizers of the rally as well as to the Montreal Police Department and Community Security Network volunteers. “We are thankful that our public safety officers and dedicated volunteers continue to ensure that we remain safe at all times,” Szlak said.
