More Action Needed to Combat Alarming Rise in Antisemitism Across Quebec
Federation CJA and CIJA spoke with a common voice to denounce antisemitism and outline their priorities for the coming year in a joint press conference held at the Gelber Conference Centre Tuesday afternoon. The briefing, given by Federation CJA Board Chair Steve Sebag and CIJA’s Vice-President (Quebec) Eta Yudin, was held under the backdrop of a resurgence of antisemitism that saw 212 hate crimes and incidents targeting the Jewish community reported to the SPVM since October 7, 2023 and just one day after demonstrators glorified Islamic terrorism on city streets to mark the anniversary of the October 7th massacre. We reiterated our call for the removal of Bochra Manaï, Montreal’s antiracism commissioner, and highlighted the need for strong moral clarity, particularly from political leaders. Major Quebec media outlets, including La Presse and the Montreal Gazette, covered the conference. We also called for an increase in arrests, and the creation of special prosecutors trained in recognizing hate crimes to best combat the rising hate directed at the Jewish community across Quebec.

Federation CJA’s annual Yom Yocheved Clothing Giveaway will provide winter wear to over 960 vulnerable individuals in our community this year. Help your teens get their volunteer/community service hours started early this year by volunteering for the unpacking and sorting! Proof of community service hours will be provided.

Help Ensure Samidoun is Designated a Terrorist Entity
CIJA is supporting a House of Commons petition launched by Member of Parliament Kevin Vuong calling on the Government of Canada to designate Samidoun as a terrorist entity. The Vancouver-based hate movement is banned in Germany and listed as a terrorist group in Israel.

Canada’s Special Envoy on Combatting Antisemitism Condemns October 7th Celebrations
While Canadian Jews nationwide gathered to mourn on October 7th, simultaneous celebrations occurred across the country glorifying and justifying the horrific massacre and ongoing captivity of 101 hostages in Gaza. Canada’s special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combatting antisemitism, Deborah Lyons, condemns such behaviour and hopes the events of October 7th serve rather as a reminder of the dangers of antisemitism and its threat “to our social fabric, political norms and democratic institutions.”
