Young Israeli Leaders Visit Montreal After Powerful Summer Camp Experience
Federation CJA welcomed 23 young Israelis from our sister cities of Be’er Sheva and Bnei Shimon to our building this past week. The group was in town as part of the Leadership Together program, an initiative designed to foster quality connections between Israelis and the broader Jewish community. This year’s cohort spent three weeks at Camp B’nai Brith, planning programs and activities for campers related to their personal experiences from October 7th and imparting Jewish culture across the camp.
“While we may struggle physically in Israel, we realized that Canadians are struggling, too, in other ways, with antisemitism. We’re all Jewish, but they experience it so much differently than us. It was very interesting and important to hear.” - Jordan, a 16-year-old participant in the 2024 Leadership Together program.
“This year, we feel that it is more important than ever to explain what is really going on in Israel. There are a lot of misunderstandings amongst those who don’t live in Israel.” – Liane, a 17-year-old participant in the 2024 Leadership Together program.

Human Rights Commissioner Resigns Before Starting Role
Earlier this week, Birju Dattani resigned from his role as Canada’s chief human rights commissioner. Our partners at CIJA, along with other Jewish organizations nationwide, vocally opposed his appointment to the position from the start, pointing to disturbing statements Dattani has made about Israel that were deeply concerning and offensive to the Jewish community. Through a CIJA action alert, nearly 11,000 emails were sent to the Minister of Justice urging him to revoke Dattani’s appointment, saying his past comments called into question the integrity of the Commission, as well as the vetting of his candidacy. Read CIJA’s statement in response to the resignation and below to read more about this story.

Everyone is to Blame for Appointment of Antisemitic Human Rights Commissioner
In this opinion piece responding to Birju Dattani’s resignation, it is argued the opposition’s failure to respond to his hiring in the first place was equally as negligent as that of the Liberal government who appointed him. It also questions the flawed vetting process for the position, which did not consider Dattani’s antisemitic history.
