THE VISION

This prize was created to demonstrate our community’s commitment to our educators whose job is to transmit Jewish values and ideas to the next generation. Teachers and educational administrators in day and supplementary schools, as well as educational agency directors and educators are eligible for this award.

AWARD WINNERS WILL RECEIVE

  • $1,800 for educators with less than five years of experience
  • $3,600 for educators with over five years of experience
    and
  • $1,800 towards a professional development opportunity for the recipient


APPLICATION PROCESS

Nominations may be submitted by peers (teaching colleagues), parents of students, school Board members, school administrators, lay and professional leaders involved in Jewish education, and rabbis, among others. In addition to completing the application form below, the nominator must also submit:

  1. a statement describing the nominee’s outstanding contributions to the field of Jewish education and why the candidate would be a worthy recipient (should not exceed two pages)
  2. two letters of support (each letter should not exceed 1.5 pages).

These documents must be mailed or dropped off at the Bronfman Jewish Education Centre, 1 Cummings Square, Montreal, H3W 1M6, attention: Helene Kaufman or e-mailed to helene.kaufman@bjec.org. The deadline to submit all application materials is April 13, 2018.

CRITERIA

Any educator who is actively involved in transmitting Jewish heritage and values is eligible to be nominated for the Gewurz award. This includes, but is not limited to individuals who work in the following institutions:

  • Jewish day schools (this would include non-Jewish teachers as well)
  • Congregational schools/Supplementary Schools
  • Central agencies of Jewish education (such as BJEC)
  • Teacher resource centres

The Awards Panel will consider nominees who:

  • Show initiative in creating transferable programs or ones that have broader impact;
  • Have a sphere of influence that is either wide or deep;
  • Demonstrate creativity and introduce innovative programming; 
  • Show leadership and commitment; 
  • Can be a catalyst for change;
  • Show communal dimensions or reflects communal values (e.g. does the nominee or his/her program make their institution a better place in the community).
