Drama V.O. Hebrew S.T. English de/by Ronit Elkabetz, Shlomi Elkabetz 115 min Pays/Country: Israel, France, Germany A powerful and polemical masterpiece, shot entirely within the confines of a rabbinical court, that follows the bitter and long-drawn out divorce proceedings of Elisha and Viviane Amsalem. Viviane Amsalem, played brilliantly by the film’s director Ronit Elkabetz, is on trial, and forced to beg for a divorce from her controlling and unwilling husband. Designed to throw a light on the ancient religious legal system which controls divorce proceedings in Israel, this spellbinding drama highlights how women in 2014 are still at the mercy of both their husbands and the religious courts.
