Combined Jewish Appeal Closes Milestone 100th Campaign

On Monday, November 20, Federation CJA closed its 100th fundraising season, and officially wrapped up its milestone Centennial year, at a spirited Campaign Closing event. Featuring megastar Liev Schreiber in conversation with CTV news anchor Tarah Schwartz, the philanthropic organization celebrated with close to 700 supporters at Palais des congrès.

General Campaign Chair Jimmy Alexander announced the historic grand total raised during the 2017 Combined Jewish Appeal: a monumental $51,987,194. This impressive figure, raised in just three short months, was made possible by the generosity of approximately 15,000 donors and 600 volunteer canvassers. It includes $36,387,707 for the base Campaign, plus an additional $3,314,877 in one-time free gifts, $5,384,610 in one-time designated gifts, and $6,900,000 for The 100 for 100 Holocaust Survivor Fund.

“For 100 years now,” Alexander told the audience, “we have been out there just doing the right thing. Period. Thank you for pledging to build a stronger, more vibrant Jewish community today, and for your children and grandchildren.”

Alexander was joined on stage by the Campaign team, including: Cheryl Brownstein, Chair of Women’s Philanthropy Campaign; Frédéric Dayan, Chair of the Sépharade Campaign; Barry Rashkovan, Chair of the Network Campaign; Lorne Novolker, Chair of the West Island Campaign; Albert Arazi, Chair of the YAD Campaign; and Guila Ezerzer, Lindsey Finkelstein and Jake Silverman, Co-Chairs of the YAD FedNext Campaign.

He also welcomed the 2018 CJA team: incoming General Campaign Chair Jonathan Ross Goodman; Galit Suissa Antebi, Women’s Philanthropy Campaign Chair; Patrick Essiminy, Sepharade Philanthropy Campaign Chair; and Orly Shapira Fayer, GenMTL Campaign Chair.

Funds raised through the Combined Jewish Appeal campaign, now over a century old, are allocated to an unparalleled network of affiliated agencies and national and international partners, to care for the vulnerable, strengthen Jewish life, and advance communal interests – in Montreal, in Israel, and in over 70 countries around the world.

New President David Amiel also extended his deepest gratitude to Gail Adelson-Marcovitz and Jack Hasen, who co-chaired Federation CJA’s Centennial, saying “You have taken us on an unforgettable journey through the last century, and made us excited about the next hundred years.” Adelson-Marcovitz and Hasen oversaw numerous events and initiatives, ranging from the Montreal Mega Mission: Centennial Edition, to the Juifs d’ici inititative, to the Virtual Community Museum, the GenMTL Expo, the Centennial Haggadah, Centennial community grants, and more. Campaign Closing was the final celebration of the milestone year. The Centennial Endowment Campaign, created to secure the future of the Montreal Jewish community, successfully raised $380 million.
