Quebec-Israel Committee hosts cocktail reception at Quebec National Assembly

CocktailThe Quebec-Israel Committee hosted a cocktail at the Quebec National Assembly on June 9 to savour a selection of fine Israeli wines along with a variety of prize-winning Quebec cheeses and other domestic delicacies. Ministers, MNAs, party officials and political staffers from the three main parliamentary caucuses, as well as senior civil servants from the Ministries of International Relations, Economic Development, and Tourism attended with members of the Montreal and Quebec City Jewish communities.

Sixteen young Quebecois leaders, representing the Parti Québécois, the Liberal Party of Quebec, the Action Démocratique du Québec, the Conservative Party of Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada, and the Bloc Québecois, as well as university campus leaders, visited Israel over the Christmas and New Year holidays. In addition to attending Midnight Mass in Jerusalem and celebrating the New Year in Tel Aviv, participants traveled across Israel, and met with political leaders and their campus counterparts.Quebec-Israel Committee Quebecois Leaders Mission

Operation Cast Lead and the Quebec Media

With over 200 quotes in the Quebec print media and dozens of interviews in the electronic media, the Quebec-Israel Committee (QIC) was at the forefront of pro-Israel advocacy efforts during Operation Cast Lead. Journalists regularly turned to QIC for expert analysis of the situation in Gaza and southern Israel, and we took the opportunities to ensure that Israel’s case was made in the Quebec media.Operation Cast Lead and the Quebec Media

Press conference in reaction to anti-Semitism in the streets of Montreal

January 15, in the course of pro-Hamas demonstrations, shocking anti-Semitic slogans were heard in the streets of Montreal. Quebec-Israel Committee in collaboration with Quebec Jewish Congress (QJC)  organized a press conference calling on all Quebecers to be vigilant against anti-Semitism and racism in all its forms.

Campus Advocacy

Campus AdvocacyLast winter semester, Hillél Montreal took a leading role in defeating a one-sided resolution proposed by a student member of the Society for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) that was designed to demonize Israel and divide the student population at McGill University. It called for the Students Society, Principal Heather Monroe-Blum, and the Government of Canada to condemn the bombings of educational and UN institutions in Gaza. Hillel’s position was that the job of the Students Society is to foster an environment conducive to academic integrity, dialogue, and trust between students. The student body’s decision to table the motion indefinitely, supported by an overwhelming majority, has helped ensure that McGill will remain a positive space for all its students. (more…)

Business Students Mission to Israel

Quebec-Israel Committee Business Students MissionIn February, Quebec-Israel Committee (QIC) staff accompanied forty non-Jewish undergraduate business students on the eight day Schwartz-Reisman Ivey-Desautels mission to Israel, organized by the Canada-Israel Committee, in collaboration with the University of Western Ontario and McGill University. The participants were exposed to all of Israel’s major tourist sites, as well as meetings with Israeli business leaders.

Omar Bulphred sentenced to seven years, Quebec Jewish Congress disappointed

On February 12, The Quebec Jewish Congress (QJC) publicly expressed its disappointment following the seven year sentence handed down to Omar Bulphred, who perpetrated the criminal arson attacks against The Skver-Toldos Yaacove School on September 2, 2006 and a Jewish community centre on April 3, 2006. Louise Sultan & Quebec Jewish Congress are honoured by the Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities

Quebec-Israel Committee Quebecois Young entrepreneurs’ mission

QIC organized a mission to Israel, in partnership with the Regroupement des Jeunes Chambres de Commerce du Québec (RJCCQ), this past May. Seventeen young Quebecois entrepreneurs, business people, and professionals visited major tourist attractions and attended meetings with leading Israeli entrepreneurs and business people, as well as visiting major companies, including Applied Materials, Project Better Place, Given Imagining, and the Teffen Industrial Park, home of Iscar.

Quebec Jewish Congress Commemorates Rwandan Genocide

From April 6 -24, the largest exhibition of photographs and memorabilia from the Rwandan genocide was showcased at the Monument National in Montreal. This was the centerpiece of a three week series of activities marking the 15th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. In addition to the very moving exhibit, QJC, in collaboration with Page-Rwanda and IBUKA (non-profit organizations dedicated to helping Rwandan survivors) organized a series of lectures, symposia, dialogue and panel discussions focusing on reconciliation and healing. QJC  also partnered with Page-Rwanda to organize the official commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the genocide.

On April 7, the Members of the National Assembly further affirmed their commitment to preserve the memory of genocide victims when they unanimously passed a motion acknowledging the 15th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. Jeffrey Boro, former President of Canadian Jewish Congress – Quebec region, led a group of Holocaust survivors to Quebec City for the occasion. Members of the Jewish community were joined by a group of Rwandan genocide survivors in the gallery of the National Assembly, thereby demonstrating their solidarity and respect for the victims.

100 Participated in Quebec Jewish Congress’ Annual Interfaith Seder

Sainte-Agathe, Quebec was the venue for this year’s annual Passover Seder hosted by Quebec Jewish Congress Charities Committee. It was an opportunity to share the messages of hope and freedom that are so central to the holiday with our fellow Quebecers.

2008 saw the unfortunate occurrence of a few anti-Semitic incidents in or near Ste Agathe. The Seder provided a timely opportunity for all town residents to move forward and to gain a better understanding of one other in a warm and social setting.

The Quebec National Assembly commemorates Yom Hashoah

On April 21, at the initiative of QJC, a joint motion presented by MNAs Lawrence Bergman (PLQ), Sylvain Simard (PQ), Gérard Deltell (ADQ) and Amir Khadir (QS) commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day was unanimously adopted by the Quebec National Assembly.

Internationally renowned Cartoonists for Peace, Jean Plantu and Michel Kichka congratulate QJC on its commitment to promoting peace, intercommunity dialogue and a universal culture of mutual respect.

Kichka-Turban IIThe Quebec Jewish Congress Charities Committee contributed to bringing “Cartooning for Peace,” an internationally renowned cartoon exhibit, to Canada for the first time. “Cartooning for Peace” is an initiative born at a meeting in 2006 between Le Monde‘s celebrated cartoonist, Plantu, and then U.N. Secretary General, Kofi Annan. The exhibit captured the public imagination and inspired more than 20 interviews with Plantu and Kichka in the print and broadcast media. Plantu and Kichka paid tribute to QJCCC’s role, as co-organizer of the 10th edition of the Action Week against Racism, during a televised interview with Anne-Marie Dussault of RDI.

Cocktail in honor of La fête nationale

fete_nationaleQuebec Jewish Congress, in partnership with CJPAC and the Quebec-Israel Committee, held its annual cocktail in honor of La fête nationale. More than 150 people attended, including Parti Québécois MNA Sylvain Simard, Executive Director of the ADQ Simon-Pierre Diamond, and former Liberal Party of Canada candidate Sébastien Dhavernas, and young community leaders from all spheres of Quebec society. The event served to strengthen QJC’s relationship with Quebec’s future leaders

Montreal’s Grands Ballets Canadiens Mark 60 years of Canada-Israel Relations

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal performed at the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel Aviv, to mark Tel Aviv’s 100th anniversary, and as part of the Israel Festival in Jerusalem to celebrate 60 years of Canada-Israel diplomatic relations. The Ballet was extremely thankful for the support it received from major Montreal Jewish community organizations, including the Quebec-Israel Committee, which worked with media and assisted with the visit.
