Background

Our community is changing dramatically: demographically, ideologically, and even geographically. Our concepts of community are in flux; indeed, the very notion of identity is evolving. The organization of our Jewish community is the product of the early to mid-20^th century, based on a particular history and context. We must determine whether the manner and form in which we have functioned continues to resonate with our constituency.  Their image of community may necessitate changes to our institutions. Therefore, we recognize that we have an excellent opportunity to revise the type of community we want, and the organizations we wish to have. By “we,” we mean every member of the Jewish community, whether active or unaffiliated. The process of re-visioning our community will be an inviting and inclusive one, through which anyone who wishes to be heard, will be listened to. The goal of this process is not to produce a document, but to create a positive dynamic of reflection and action. Above all, Imagine 2020 is about looking positively at the future and harnessing the energy and creativity of our community so as to make Montreal’s Jewish community even greater.
