Jeremy Kornbluth

Volunteer Profile
TIKUN OLAM - SEPTEMBER 2004

It’s my duty to give back to this community. My family has always been active and I could see it no other way,” says Jeremy Kornbluth, a 22-yearold volunteer who recognizes the impact a pair of giving hands can have on the 2004 CJA Campaign.

Kornbluth, with the help of a pick-up truck and as many friends as he can muster, took on the complex responsibility of mounting and maintaining more than 300 street signs throughout the city. The signs are intended to market this year’s Combined Jewish Appeal campaign to the Jewish public. With several skill-developing experiences in aiding the community, he sees this as an opportunity to be involved at a grassroots level.

“People my age are starting to have more of a sense of ownership over this Campaign – there comes a time where you realize its your time to give back,”

he says. Federation CJA markets the annual Campaign through several outlets, including ads in print, on the radio and on television. Pole signs that display this year’s Campaign theme, “For Ourselves, For Our Children, For Israel, Forever”, are an effective publicity tool and are on display throughout the boroughs of Cote-St-Luc, Hampstead, Saint-Laurent and Dollard des Ormeaux. Kornbluth’s team checks on the signs daily, making sure to correct any damage or vandalism.

Also serving as co-chair to this year’s Campus Campaign , along with Beverly Shimansky and Jason Takefman, Kornbluth hopes to build bridges to Jewish young adults who are not involved with their community. After having chaired last year’s Campus Campaign Gala, an event that attracted more than 600 young people, he worked to outreach efforts, including a golf tournament in August and an upcoming poker event in 2005.

Kornbluth’s case shows that there are many ways one can give back to one’s community.

“At my age, it’s not always possible to give large donations to campaign – but time can be just as valuable, if not more.”
