Work green MISSION STATEMENT FEDERATION CJA and our family of agencies, guided by Jewish and humanitarian values, will conduct our business in a fashion that supports and enhances sustainability through equitable, responsible and comprehensive environmental policies and actions. We intend to lead by example, for both the Jewish and general community, by greening the way we do business. We will reduce our ecological footprint by minimizing waste, reducing resource use, maximizing reuse and recycling, and by promoting better environmental practices and respect for our fragile planet. Objectives • Reduce our carbon footprint • Be a leader-by-example for the Jewish community and community-at-large Strategies • Partner with local Municipality • Certification Goal : BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) • Involve our stakeholders • Agencies • Staff • Volunteers • Community members Certification Target: • BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) GO GREEN program • Five categories of environmental responsibility: • Resource Consumption • Energy Use • Water Use • Waste Reduction & Recycling • Construction Waste • Recycling • Material Selection • Hazardous Materials • Building Materials • Ozone Depleting substances • Interior Environment • Indoor Air Quality • HVAC Maintenance • Tenant Awareness • Communication Program Actions already taken: • Energy Audit performed • Electricity consumption at Cummings House reduced by 20% over 2 years. • 100% biodegradable and phosphate-free cleaning products • Low voltage lights • Office paper used = minimum 30% post consumer recycled content • Recycled restroom paper products • Recycling of paper and printer cartridges • Shredding and recycling of confidential documents • Expanded paper, can and bottle recycling • Phased out Styrofoam disposables • Introduced ‘real’ dishes for Gelber food service • Moved from bottled water to filtered water • Campus wide water usage audit • Transition to ‘green’ disposable paper products for food service where dishes are not feasible • Publications and printed matter use post-consumer recycled paper Actions in planning stage: • Printers to print recto-verso by default • Attention to ‘green’ purchasing • Project involvement and ownership by staff and leadership… taking it to the next level… Three staff committees • Marketing and Communications • Greening marketing and communications in FEDERATION CJA and its family of agencies • Education and Awareness • Bringing green knowledge and initiatives to the agencies and the community • 3R’s PLUS • Developing and implementing practical solutions to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in FEDERATION CJA and agencies |
