In addition to sitting on the West Island Management Committee, Stanley Sculnick has taken on the responsibility of chairing the West Island division for the 2006 Combined Jewish Appeal.

Asked what drew him to the challenge of leading this portion of the campaign, he replied, “I’ve been involved with Federation CJA, in one capacity or another for 30 years, my father was involved before me, and my daughters are involved with me. But, on the West Island, people aren’t used to the idea that Federation CJA is here for them. I really want to educate them, to let them know everything that the federation and our family of agencies will be able to do for them.”

Sculnick, 47, has been an active participant and enthusiastic booster of the March to Jerusalem pretty much since its inception, more than 30 years ago. As a kid, he was a camper at Camp B’nai Brith; as an adult, he has been a member of its board. When he and his wife, Linda, moved to Dollard des Ormeaux 24 years ago, they joined the Beth Tikvah congregation and became active in the life of the synagogue

“I knew from the start that this was a great community in which to raise kids,” said the trucking company owner.

Both of his children are deeply devoted to the Jewish community. Courtney, 22, and Chelsea, 17, went to the YM-YWHA summer camp and Camp B’nai Brith. Both have participated in the March of the Living, which inspired a strong connection to Israel. Indeed, in both of their cases, they developed their most enduring friendships with people they met on the March.

Chelsea, in particular, has become passionate about spreading the word about the March of the Living and Holocaust remembrance. She made a very eloquent speech on the subject on the occasion of the launch of the 2005 Combined Jewish Appeal.

The Sculnick children are prime examples of the kind of affiliation to the Jewish community that Federation CJA is striving to achieve among all young West Islanders.

“The kids represent the future of our community,” their father affirms. “They bring energy and new ideas that are rejuvenating for all of us and ensure our communal vitality into the future.”

His goal for the upcoming Combined Jewish Appeal is to broaden awareness of Federation CJA across the West Island, underscoring the benefits it is bringing to the community. He sees this year as an opportunity to lay a solid foundation and to encourage people to become involved.

“The services funded by the annual campaign sell themselves,” Sculnick says. “I think every Jew believes in the work we do, it’s just a question of letting them see everything that we accomplish for the community.”
