Federation CJA has allocated almost $8 million to providing social services in our Jewish community. Included among the agencies working in this domain are:
- Jewish Family Services, helping families and individuals in need, those living in poverty, individuals struggling with mental illness, and those who are physically disabled. It also provides counseling in schools and has designed such innovative programs as TO-BACC-OFF, an effective anti-smoking campaign and a Mentroship Program that pairs university-aged youth with adolescents to provide the teens with positive role models.
- Jewish Employment Montreal, which offers job counseling, skills training, job placement, and job retention services. JEM is very active in assisting recent graduates entering the workforce for the first time, new immigrants looking for a first placement, and older workers facing the prospect of upgrading their skill sets.
- Jewish Immigrant Aid Services (JIAS) Montreal is often the first point of contact for new Jewish immigrants to our community. A study by Federation CJA shows an especially stark window of economic vulnerability for recent immigrants in the first five years after settlement. JIAS Montreal offers a continuum of services, including early resettlement, assistance finding housing, integration and acculturation programs, and help for them to become integral members of the Montreal Jewish community.
- Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors (CJCS) caters to 4,500 members in the 50+ age group, encouraging independent living, planning for retirement, and a positive attitude towards aging. Since our community has a high percentage of seniors (21.6%) in proportion to the overall Montreal population (only 12.2%), and a significant number of Holocaust Survivors, the services of the CJCS are especially valued. Its services range from homecare for those with limited mobility and other health-related issues to cultural and recreational activities for those who continue to be vibrant.
- Project Genesis received an increase in its allocation, in recognition of the important role it plays, particularly, in the area of social advocacy.
