At the height of the recession which threw the Canadian economy into turmoil, that Federation CJA, in collaboration with Agence Ometz, the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors, and Communauté sépharade unifiée du Québec, added a new resource for those in our community who desperately needed it. Within 16 days we organized and opened Le Café to provide hot, nutritious kosher meals in a welcoming and dignified environment to alleviate the hardship brought on by the economic crisis.
From the outset, it was clear that the initiative was necessary to fulfill growing needs in the community. Whereas, in an optimal situation, Le Café wouldn’t be necessary, it was an immediate success. Open for dinner every Tuesday; Wednesday and Thursday, it has served over 82,000 meals, including more than 6,000 to children.

As well, more than 8,000 volunteers have helped out at Le Café, assisting with food preparation, service to clients, and clean up. They have really been the backbone that supports the entire structure of Le Café. Their dedication has made it possible to keep it open and running cost-effectively.
We’d like to salute the community for what it has done with Le Café – from those who have made it a family atmosphere and place of refuge as they grapple with hard times, to the professionals and volunteers who have shown their solidarity by and making it a place where all can feel welcome and respected, and, of course, to the donors who support it.
Federation CJA is committed to keeping Le Café open as long as the need dictates.
