The Jewish Public Library (JPL) is unique among Montreal and world Jewish institutions. Containing the largest circulating Judaica collection in North America, the JPL represents a vital resource both locally and internationally.  Celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2004, the Library serves the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of Jewish Montrealers of all ages and backgrounds.  The JPL has close to 5,500 members, and receives 700 to 800 visitors weekly.  Its over 150,000-item collection, accessible online, includes a wealth of best sellers and general materials, as well as collections in five languages.  It is a key provider of cultural and educational programming in the community.  Its Children’s Library offers a wide variety of programs and activities and more than 30,000 items for children up to 14 years of age.  The JPL’s special collections and archives serve as a vital resource to preserve the history of Canada’s Jewish community.

The JPL holds paramount its obligation to transmit and provide Jewish values, knowledge, and cultural heritage, by providing access to Jewish texts, history, and literature — the very vocabulary of Jewish life necessary to create and reinforce Jewish identity and continuity.
