Project Genesis is a grassroots community organization of Côte-des-Neiges, a culturally diverse Montreal neighbourhood, where over 40% of households live below the poverty line. As a wide-ranging network of people of many backgrounds, Project Genesis stands with neighbourhood residents in facing some of their most difficult challenges, such as basic income security, housing problems, access to healthcare, and immigration difficulties. It seeks to provide support in ways that promote independence and inter-dependence, and a stronger, more resilient community. In 2009/2010 Genesis provided over 10,500 in-person interventions, serving people from 137 countries of origin. As well, an estimated 9,500 interventions were provided over the phone.
Getting involved at Project Genesis
Our mission: the defence of social rights on an individual and on a collective level, and fighting poverty.
Volunteer position descriptions:
Storefront advisor. Position involves providing information, referral and advocacy on issues such as housing, welfare, pensions, family allowances and other government programs.
Requirements: Bilingualism, ability to easily understand and apply written information, sensitivity to cultural diversity. Commitment of four hours per week plus two hours of training monthly for a minimum period of three to six months.
Storefront receptionist. Responsibilities include greeting clients, filling out client forms and answering the telephone.
Requirements: Commitment of four hours per week. Spoken English and French.

Requirements: Sharing in the values of Project Genesis, attendance at monthly meetings and other activities.
Outreach volunteer. On a door-to-door basis, volunteers inform Cote-des-Neiges residents about our services, discuss community concerns, and provide information, referral and advocacy services. The work may also involve helping tenants organize to bring about needed improvements in their buildings.
Requirement: Commitment of approximately three hours per week.
Home Advocacy Services volunteer. Position involves carrying out visits to homebound people with reduced mobility, within the framework of our Home Advocacy Services Program, to assist people on such questions as rights and responsibilities as tenants/landlords, pensions, welfare, and other government or community programs.
Requirement: Commitment of 4 hours per week.
