Members of the Executive of Federation CJA, led by President David Cape, were in Israel last week for an exploratory mission. The climax of the mission was the dedication of Montreal Square in Beer Sheva.
Located in the Ramot neighborhood, the square includes an impressive light and water feature. It was named in recognition of the Montreal Jewish community’s long-standing and monumental contribution to the city of Beer Sheva. A year ago, the Jewish community of Montreal was presented with a “Lifetime Achievement” award by Beer Sheva.
At the dedication ceremony, Mayor Ruvik Danilovich spoke of the special bond between the two communities.
The group began its visit in Jerusalem where it toured the Old City and met with Minister Benny Begin. The discussion focused on the social, political and economic challenges facing Israel, as well as the difficulties of explaining Israel’s positions abroad.
The group then spent two days in Montreal’s partnership region of Beer Sheva and Bnei Shimon, where it met key regional players, including the mayor, deputy mayors, the Israel Steering Committee, stakeholders and program participants. It also toured some of the projects which are supported by Federation CJA and which have contributed enormously to the development of the capital of the Negev in the areas of education, youth-at-risk and young adults.
David Cape, President of Federation CJA, thanked the municipality for the honour and pledged to maintain Montreal’s unwavering commitment to the people of Beer Sheva.
